A Mission to Everywhere

Every day we are confronted with the reality that we live in a divided world. Not only are we divided by things such as borders, oceans and languages but we are also divided by race, class, political parties, interpersonal conflict, misunderstandings, unforgiveness and much more. All of these lines of division provide opportunities for us to build walls of mistrust, anger and hostility. But according to this passage in Acts, these lines of division also provide opportunities for the gospel to erase the lines and bring the joy of reconciliation and unity.

A Mission for Everyone

Luke's innovation [when compared to the other gospels] is to show that the 'gospel-story is incomplete without the church-story' (Peterson, 100). God's story of redemption has a climactic center - Jesus' life, death and resurrection - and a certain grand finale (his coming again - Acts 1:11), but the story is not complete without the "act" in between. In this act, the church takes center stage. As Darrell Bock says, "Acts emphasizes... evangelism and a God-honoring life, as making up the central character of this new people of God (40). When the disciples ask Jesus if now is the time for the final act in the kingdom of God (1:6), Jesus answers in Acts 1:8, "No and you can't know that time, but now is the time for witness." Acts tells us that for all Jesus' people, above all else, now is a time for mission.

Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray

Prayer. It's something we all wish we did more. Better. In many ways it's the measure of our spiritual lives and the depth of our relationship with God. We all know how to pray when we are in trouble, "Help!". But often find it hard to pray "Thank You" when life is going according to our plans.

Because of all this I don't think it is hard for us to identify with Jesus' disciples. They must have observed him in prayer. They must have seen and heard how prayer was the very source of his life and service. So they asked Him, "Lord, teach us how to pray". Thankfully for us, they remembered his answer. It's recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It's come to be known over the years as the Lord's Prayer.

Though many of us know the Lord's Prayer by memory, most of us don't appreciate its power as a model and outline of our own prayers. Today's sermon will be focusing on what we can learn from Jesus' well-known prayer. May this day move you to cry out "Father..." and find a loving God waiting for the prayers of his child.

From Fear to Freedom - Letting Go and Trusting Do

How do you handle stress, anxiety and worry? What causes you do feel these emotions? When we face big decisions or feel burdens weighing us down, what we do in those situations can indicate where our foundation lies. This story from the life of Abraham illustrates the difference between pursuing life from a self-made foundation and pursuing life from the vantage point of God's promises. The difference is the difference between a life of fear and a life of faith.

The Signficance of the Incarnation

How important is it that Jesus came as a flesh and bones human being? John, the apostle, says nothing is more important than this. The incarnation - as theologians call it - stands out as the centerpiece of the gospel, for it shows us that God had to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Advent Amazement

How do we regain the sense of wonder and amazement we experienced as children? Have we lost the ability to be overcome with wonder? The "glad tidings" about the Christ who has come can fill us with a sense of amazement that moves us to a deeper freedom and joy in life. Consider this description of Jesus and be open again to wonder.
